Lupang Hinirang

National Anthem

Bayang Magiliw
perlas ng Silanganan
Alab ng puso
Sa dibdib mo’y buhay
Lupang hinirang
Duyan ka ng magiting
Sa manlulupig
Di ka pasisiil.
Sa dagat at bundok
Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw
May dilag ang tula
At awit sa paglayang minamahal
Ang kislap ng watawat mo’y
Tagumpay na nagniningning
Ang bituin at araw niya
Kailan pa ma’y di magdidilim
Lupa ng araw
ng luwalhati’t pagsinta
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo.
Aming ligaya
Na pag may mang-aapi
Ang mamatay nang dahil sa iyo.’

“Lupang Hinirang” (“Chosen Land”), also known as “Marcha Nacional Filipina” (“Philippine National March”) is the national anthem of the Philippines. It is more widely known by its incipit “Bayang Magiliw” (“Beloved Country”).

Julian Felipe, a Cavite-based Filipino composer and music teacher, wrote the lyrics of the Philippine National Anthem. It was played by the San Francisco de Malabon band during the Independence Day ceremony in Kawit, Cavite. It was the first time that the Filipino flag was raised.

The anthem was left silent for more than a year. Jose Palma, a teenage poet-soldier, penned the poem “Filipinas” at the end of August 1899. This poem captured the fierce patriotism and fighting spirit of the Filipino people in excellent Spanish words. It became the anthem’s lyrics, and today it is sung in Filipino with official lyrics translated from the original Spanish lyrics in the early 1900s by Felipe de Leon.
